I am only manly because I drive a big truck

This commercial in my opinion was sexist and stereotypical. Of course, the part where the supposedly brought in "real actors" must of created some sort of attraction to certain viewers. What was most realistic about this commercial was that they asked different groups of people (e.g. single women, kids, bearded men).

I found it a bit insulting to have people speak highly of the idea that being manly or macho meant having a big truck. This type of assumption and comment is purely based off of first impressions and appearance. When the two photos were compared, everyone automatically said the guy standing next to the truck is cooler. When this part of the commercial played, all I thought about was the saying,"Bigger is better".

I also recall a women saying that the man driving the smaller car would be a guy your mother would want you to bring home, versus what you would really want to bring home, which is the man standing by the truck. This just made me realize even more how sexist our society still is. I believe that you do not need big things and fancy cars to be considered manly, and that being manly in general is overrated.

  1. I agree to your post because I don't think that products can make us feel better, especially with the commercials that hires people to speak the opposite to what they think is the truth. Commercials should not use be stereotypical towards its viewers because everyone is great the way they are. The media makes a certain criteria to how a person should look or act. Something like a Jeep would not be able to make a man more masculine because a car is just a car, it doesn't change the appearance of how we look like.

  2. I completely agree with you. This commercial was sexist and stereotypical. Media has been very stereotypical and sexist, even more so as advertisements are now becoming very cliché. However I'm sure this advertisement worked, some guys who watched this commercial probably considered purchasing a truck because of what some of the people said. Sometimes bigger is not better. I personally think that a car does not give an impression of who you are. Vehicles should just be there to take you from point A to point B.

  3. I definitely agree with this post, it was incredibly sexist and stereotypical. It was also unrealistic, and I'm almost certain that in reality, people wouldn't change their impression on the guy, because of the car he drives. I'm sure this was offensive to men who don't drive trucks, as it would make them feel as if they're less manly due to their car. This is completely untrue, and the car you drive has nothing to do with you, and also does not reflect on who you are. Commercials like this one should not make people feel unsure of themselves based on the materialistic things they are promoting. I also hope people understand and believe that not driving a truck would make them less of man.
